Background of the Study
Geriatric syndromes refer to a collection of common health issues in older adults, including frailty, cognitive decline, incontinence, falls, and pressure ulcers. These conditions are often multifactorial and can significantly impact the quality of life and functional independence of elderly individuals. With the aging population increasing globally, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria, geriatric care has become an essential focus of healthcare systems. Nurses, who often provide primary care to elderly patients, play a critical role in identifying and managing these conditions.
Bayelsa State General Hospital, located in the southern region of Nigeria, serves as a major healthcare provider for elderly patients. However, there is limited information regarding the level of knowledge and preparedness of nurses in managing geriatric syndromes. Understanding nurses' knowledge of these conditions is critical in improving care for the elderly and reducing the negative outcomes associated with geriatric syndromes. This study seeks to investigate nurses' knowledge of geriatric syndromes and their impact on elderly patient care at Bayelsa State General Hospital.
Statement of the Problem
The lack of adequate knowledge and training on geriatric syndromes among nurses can result in suboptimal care for elderly patients. Despite the growing aging population in Nigeria, many healthcare workers, including nurses, are not adequately equipped to handle the unique healthcare needs of elderly individuals. This study aims to assess the knowledge of nurses regarding geriatric syndromes and evaluate the impact of this knowledge on the care provided to elderly patients at Bayelsa State General Hospital.
